We’ve been hearing a lot about the cost-of-living crisis and rising inequality, particularly in the wake of the recent Oxfam Inequality Report.

But where do billionaires, and even the prospect of trillionaires, fit into this picture? What narratives shape our understanding of extreme wealth and its relationship to inequality? And what happens when we examine those stories through a more critical lens?

In his new book, Stinking Rich: The Four Myths of the Good Billionaire, UTS professor Carl Rhodes explores the narratives and beliefs that have emerged alongside the rise of extreme wealth. In doing so, he challenges readers to question the systems that enable wealth and power to become increasingly concentrated, and to reconsider the promise of the “American Dream” that continues to be promoted around the world.
