Maggie Cheung plays Ruan Lingyu, the tragic screen siren whose melodramatic performances defined the golden age of Chinese silent cinema. Hounded by vicious Shanghai tabloids over her private life and romantic entanglements, Ruan was driven to suicide at just 24, leaving behind the devasting note: ‘Gossip is a fearful thing.’ The film offers a kaleidoscopic yet intimate portrait of the ill-fated actress, blending lush period drama, archival film excerpts, and behind-the-scenes footage of the present-day shoot. ‘Maggie, how would you want to be remembered decades later?’ director Stanley Kwan asks. ‘Isn’t she [Ruan] an exact replica of myself?’ Cheung replies. An absorbing, meta-reflexive take on stardom, scandal and mythmaking from 1930s Shanghai to 1990s Hong Kong.
