Cinema Night @ The Capitol (RMIT)
The Best Films You’ve Never Seen
RMIT University are hosting a queer cinema evening at the Capitol, opening with Gus Van Sant‘s “My Own Private Idaho (1991; starring River Phoenix & Keanu Reeves)” followed by Kenneth Anger’s short film “Scorpio Rising (1963)”. It is part of their “Best Films You’ve Never Seen” program, designed to showcase classic and modern cinema at its peak. This event aims to highlight the importance and history of New Queer Cinema, a movement that emerged in the 1990s in response to mainstream representations of LGBTQIA+ lives. To top it off, the screening opens with RMIT academic and guest curator Dr. Patrick Kelly providing an introduction and context for audiences encountering these works for the first time. Open to all! If you're into films, good conversations and meeting new people, come tag along. Figure we can grab a bite to eat either before or afterwards, depending on schedules. Hope to see you there! Date & Time: 21/07 — 6.30pm - 9.00pm Price: $10 (discount available for RMIT students) Location: The Capitol, 113 Swanston Street, Melbourne, VIC, 3000 (5 minute walk from Flinders Station) Further Info: https://www.rmit.edu.au/events/2026/july/the-best-films-youve-never-seen-queer-edition
